They deplore the bad management of the central government and the Cabinet departments, the wholesale corruption in government, the tendency to do things in secret despite the law that requires government officials to act in the open and make their documents available to the media and the public.

Other lives lived like my lolo Monching

By Paco Magsaysay

Philippine Daily Inquirer

First Posted 01:53:00 08/31/2008

MANILA, Philippines—It was on this day, Aug. 31, exactly 101 years ago, that my grandfather Ramon Magsaysay was born. The little, quiet town of Iba in Zambales witnessed his birth at past midnight, just as the earth welcomed the coming of dawn, which old folks believed was a good omen.

My biggest regret is that I wasn’t around yet to meet him. Lolo Monching’s story and example not only give me comfort, but also inspiration and wisdom—much like any grandson could learn from a doting grandfather. To me, he is larger than life. He is immortalized not only in books, but also in streets, in schools, in towns, in monuments and in parks. There is not much room to bottle up my pride and joy, whenever I see his name inscribed in these places. But of all the many things that honor this great man, I consider the work of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) the most important.

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines—It’s a tough choice: Hipon ni Gloria (Gloria’s shrimp) or Hipon ni JDV (JDV’s shrimp)?

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) research center here is studying two kinds of shrimp— ulang or freshwater prawns, which researchers like to call “Hipon ni Gloria,” named in honor of President Macapagal-Arroyo who supported its culture, and the vannamei or Pacific white shrimp, which was cultured only after former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. was able to lift the ban on the importation of the prawn species.
