BANGKOK—The countries of Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam have agreed in principle to form a rice price-fixing cartel similar to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) as costs of the staple grain rocket, Thailand’s prime minister said on Wednesday.

The Philippine government has received yet another blackeye through a US State Department country report which pointed to the Philippines as being a haven for money laundering, among other crimes, pointing to “cash smuggling” and money laundering as a “major concern,” stating that many casinos of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) “located near small provincial international airports that may have “lax enforcement of cash smuggling” are vulnerable to cash smuggling.

Gov’t workers get 10% salary increase
GOVERNMENT workers will get up to a 10 percent increase in their basic pay starting July 1.
President Macapagal-Arroyo is expected to sign today an executive order authorizing the increase to mark Labor Day, according to Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita.

THE government is nurturing a new problematic agency in the National Food Authority (NFA) by giving it billions of pesos in subsidies every year.
According to Sen. Edgardo Angara, who chairs the Senate Committee on Agriculture, the NFA has the makings of a new Napocor, or the National Power Corp., whose multibillion-dollar debts constituted the single-biggest expense item on the nation’s budget for many years.

Palace: Senate report on NBN a vindication
MalacaƱang yesterday said the upcoming Senate report absolving President Arroyo from any liability on the anomalous $329-million national broadband network (NBN) project is a "vindication" for the national leadership.
The Palace was reacting to the statement Tuesday of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, chair of the Blue Ribbon committee, that the Senate tri-committee investigation on the NBN-ZTE deal had yielded evidence "leading up to the Office of the President" but there was no direct testimony that would link President Arroyo to the anomalies in the project.
