MANILA, Philippines—The government has summoned the top officials of local oil companies to explain the latest round of fuel price increases.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said Saturday Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes was scheduled to meet Sunday with oil company executives ask them “to explain the basis for the computation” for the P1 a liter increase in pump prices and P1 per kilogram of liquefied petroleum gas.

MANILA, Philippines—The prices of gasoline, diesel and kerosene went up by P1 a liter and of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by P1 a kilogram over the weekend, as oil firms scrambled to recover as much as P7 a liter in unrecovered costs for gasoline and diesel.

Name names, Palace tells US on report of AFP corruption

MANILA, Philippines—Malacañang on Saturday disputed the unfavorable US State Department Country Report on terrorism released Wednesday, denying that its fight against terrorists was saddled by problems such as corruption, limited resources and low salaries of security forces.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Anthony Golez called on the United States state department to name names and seriously help in prosecuting corrupt Filipino generals and other military officials alluded to in the report.

Pump prices up P1 per liter

ILOCOS NORTE – Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes urged the country’s petroleum players to explain their move to raise pump prices by P1 per liter yesterday.

“We will summon the presidents of Shell, Petron, Chevron and other independent oil players to explain to the Department of Energy and to the public why they need to increase their prices by P1 per liter,” Reyes told reporters attending a wind power project briefing here.

Reyes said he would summon representatives from the oil firms for a meeting tomorrow to explain their side.

Thai rice exporters themselves think it isn’t going to happen, but forming a cartel of rice-exporting countries is a good idea, as far as the Thai government is concerned. If oil-producing countries can form their own organization that controls the global supply and prices of petroleum products, why not countries that produce an even more basic need?
