Meralco rates cheaper for small consumers

Philippine Daily Inquirer

First Posted 02:27:00 07/10/2008

Rattling off numbers does not make a statement true. On the contrary, it’s as the saying goes, “Garbage in, garbage out.”

I refer to Dave Diwa’s letter “Meralco’s distribution charge is highest in Philippines.” (Philippine Daily Inquirer, 6/28/08). Whoever gave him the data for that letter did him a disservice. By simply going to the Energy Regulatory Commission, he could have found out that, unlike other electric distributors in the Philippines, distribution rates of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) were designed by the government to favor small consumers — small consumers are charged lower distribution rates and those consuming more are charged higher rates. It is called socialized pricing.
