MANILA, Philippines—President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is facing a fresh attempt to unseat her after the House of Representatives confirmed Monday its receipt of an impeachment complaint, but her allies and critics expect it to go the way of the three previous complaints filed against her.

At least one-third of the 240-member House would have to support a complaint to impeach Ms Arroyo and send it to the opposition-dominated Senate for trial. The opposition controls only 28 House seats.

Provinces getting poorer

Gap between NCR, rural area worsens

By Darwin G. Amojelar, Reporter

A “significant” gap in economic output for nearly two decades between Metro Manila and the low-income regions worsened poverty incidence in the country, a government study said Monday.

“The unequal distribution of the level of regional economic activity in the country has been apparent through the years, as majority of the economic output is concentrated in NCR [National Capital Region, or Metro Manila] and the two adjacent regions of Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog,” Romulo Virola, secretary-general of the National Statistical Coordination Board said.

But according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), focusing on employment, the stability of local prices and maintaining growth are areas that could be managed well so that the impact of crippled credit markets and panicky investors worldwide could be blunted.

Philippine banks have no reason so far to react to the US crisis the way US and European banks have reacted.

The only real casualty has been Philamlife Insurance Co., since its parent company, American International Group, went belly up. But even for Philamlife, being fundamentally strong and actually quite profitable, the whole episode would be just a momentary distraction.

(Rey Marfil)

“Ako may invitation. May petition ako at si Sen. Jamby for Trillanes.
