Share prices tumbled to 26-month lows as shockwaves from falling markets across the globe triggered massive sell-offs.
Dealers said the Philippine shares tracked the weakness in global markets and emerged 4.8 percent lower. The composite index fell 116.45 points to 2,307.74 points, while the all-shares index fell 3.99 percent to 1,472.74 points.

AIG throws $440,000 party after bailout

WASHINGTON – Days after it got a federal bailout, American International Group Inc. (AIG) spent $440,000 on a posh California retreat for its executives, complete with spa treatments, banquets and golf outings, according to lawmakers investigating the company’s meltdown.
AIG sent its executives to the coastal St. Regis resort south of Los Angeles even as the company tapped into an $85-billion loan from the government it needed to stave off bankruptcy. The resort tab included $23,380 worth of spa treatments for AIG employees, according to invoices the resort turned over to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

The Department of Health (DOH) yesterday cleared 21 more milk, chocolate and ice cream products after these tested negative for toxic melamine contamination.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said only one product, Jolly Cow Slender High Calcium Low Fat Milk (1 liter), tested positive for melamine.
Another product under the same brand, Jolly Cow Pure Fresh Milk, was among the first batch of 28 products cleared of melamine contamination.
Duque said Jolly Cow Slender, distributed by Fly Ace Corp., failed the melamine analysis conducted by the BFAD on China-made dairy products.
