MANILA, Philippines—A number of former rebel soldiers, their prospects and possibilities now wider and more challenging, are proving that there is life after the “Oakwood mutiny.”

Eight of 53 ex-officers pardoned and released last December from the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Custodial Center in Fort Bonifacio have moved on and are reinventing themselves as “revolutionary anti-illegal drugs agents.” They are now undergoing training at the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Academy in Tagaytay City.

RP seeks cheap US rice

WASHINGTON – Officials of the Philippine government’s National Food Authority (NFA) and suppliers are here haggling over the importation of 100,000 metric tons of rice to Manila.

The NFA is using $75 million in credit guarantees from a US Department of Agriculture program, which promotes sales of US farm goods to developing countries by assuring lenders they will get paid even if a borrower defaults.

Oil firms change mind, raise fuel prices anew

MANILA, Philippines—Despite earlier indications of a respite from oil price increases this weekend, oil companies yesterday raised the pump prices of gasoline, diesel and kerosene by 50 centavos a liter.

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., Eastern Petroleum Corp., Flying V and Unioil Petroleum Philippines Inc. increased prices at 12:01 a.m., followed by Petron Corp. and Chevron Philippines Inc. at 6 a.m.

MANILA, Philippines—Northern Samar, Sulu and Masbate are the “poorest” provinces in the Philippines based on the National Poverty Map 2007 prepared by the Peace and Equity Foundation.

The PEF identified the three provinces as having the “most pronounced conditions of poverty” among all the provinces in the country in a presentation last week during the World Bank-sponsored Panibagong Paraan ’08.

Makati judge new Sandigan justice

MANILA, Philippines—The National Food Authority will increase the price of the rice it sells by less than P1 in the next few months, NFA Assistant Administrator Conrado Ibañez said on Saturday.

It would be “bad economics” not to adjust the price of NFA rice, currently at P18.25 per kilogram, after the palay-buying price was increased from P12 to P17 per kilogram, said Ibañez.
