Palace: Switch to brown rice

MANILA, Philippines—Malacañang is encouraging the public to start eating brown rice sold by the National Food Authority (NFA) to ease dependence on white rice.
Brown rice is more nutritious and easier to produce, according to Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo.
Fajardo, a former mayor in Nueva Ecija, said brown rice was the product of the first stage in the milling process, while white rice was the product of the second stage.

Customs exec, 6 others suspended

The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the preventive suspension of a ranking Bureau of Customs (BOC) official for the illegal release of 16 luxury vehicles from the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, while another six were meted the same penalty for alleged involvement in various corrupt acts.
In a nine-page order, Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez said Deputy District Collector Priscilla Cordova should be suspended for six months pending investigation on her supposed involvement in the smuggling of imported vehicles at the Port of Subic.

There may be a looming rice shortage but pan de sal supply is more than sufficient.
The Philippine Association of Flour Millers gave assurance yesterday that there will be no shortage of flour, the main ingredient of pan de sal.
Pan de sal or salt bread is usually eaten by Filipinos during breakfast. It is made of flour, eggs, lard, salt, yeast, and sugar and is a rich source of carbohydrates and other nutrients.
