AFP gains upper hand as troops overrun 15 MILF camps

THE Armed Forces yesterday intimated it was gaining ground against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front guerrillas who lost 15 camps to soldiers in two days of continued military operations to capture two renegade MILF commanders who led attacks on civilian communities in Central Mindanao.

In a news conference in Camp Aguinaldo, AFP chief General Alexander Yano said the largest of the 15 bases seized, Camp Vietnam in Maguindanao, is equipped with watch towers, an obstacle course, and sniper posts.

Ground, air assaults killed 125 rebels, says military

MANILA, Philippines—The military Monday said troops were closing in on two recalcitrant rebel commanders and claimed to have killed 125 of their men, in two weeks of ground and air assaults in Maguindanao province that also claimed the lives of civilians.

Dr. Elizabeth Samama, Maguindanao provincial physician, said five civilians were killed and three others were wounded in military air strikes and artillery and mortar fire in Datu Piang town on Friday and Saturday.
