Other lives lived like my lolo Monching
By Paco Magsaysay
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—It was on this day, Aug. 31, exactly 101 years ago, that my grandfather Ramon Magsaysay was born. The little, quiet town of Iba in Zambales witnessed his birth at past midnight, just as the earth welcomed the coming of dawn, which old folks believed was a good omen.
My biggest regret is that I wasn’t around yet to meet him. Lolo Monching’s story and example not only give me comfort, but also inspiration and wisdom—much like any grandson could learn from a doting grandfather. To me, he is larger than life. He is immortalized not only in books, but also in streets, in schools, in towns, in monuments and in parks. There is not much room to bottle up my pride and joy, whenever I see his name inscribed in these places. But of all the many things that honor this great man, I consider the work of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) the most important.
